I went to Marrakech in search of magic

In surfing, glassy describes perfect conditions; when there’s no wind or chop, and instead the surface of the water—waves and all—is smooth as glass. It’s easy, it’s effortless, it’s ideal.

The best July retreats to book ASAP

18 ways to set that OOO this summer.

by Clark Williams | 05.30.2018

For when your PTO days are precious and your trip-planning time is limited, there are retreats: organized escapes that have the added bonus of helping you master the yoga headstand, learn to prepare raw food, make it a week without talking, or just generally feel chill af.

While there’s sometimes “work” involved (hey, emotional breakthroughs don’t just happen), it’s a different kind of work than what you might usually deal with in the office and often happens far away from the stresses of everyday life. Best of all? You just need to show up at the retreat, and the rest is taken care of. (In case The Glassy’s ultra-curated city guides still require too much trip planning.)

Here are the top retreats around the globe this spring–from long weekends to multi-day intensives–that are so worth the vacation days.

Find Your Voice with Moon Club and The Numinous in Stockbridge, MA

When: July 5-8
What: Ruby Warrington and Alexandra Roxo–the electrifying (and Glassy-beloved) duo behind Moon Club–lead a weekend of astrology sessions, storytelling-as-healing workshops, and Kundalini disco (which, yes, is as awesome as it sounds).

Soul Adventures’ Soul Medicine Retreat in Ibiza, Spain

When: June 6-10
What: For those who can’t commit to a week in Ibiza (um, get your priorities straight), Soul Adventures offers a four-day super sesh packed with Kundalini yoga classes and locally sourced, detox-centric meals meant to maximize the whole food-as-medicine concept.

Sound School in Hurley, NY

When: July 6-8
What: Ever watched someone play a Himalayan singing bowl and been like, “But how?” Head upstate to Maha Rose North for a weekend crash course in healing sounds (think Biosonic tuning forks, Indian shruti boxes, and crystal bowls). But it’s not all work and no play: You’ll also get to chill the f out with daily sound baths from the retreat’s leaders.

Chica Brava surf retreat in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

When: July 7-14
What: If you’re dead set on nailing your pop up by the end of the week, opt for Chica Brava rather than booking a room at Maderas Village. The ladies-only surf camp is less about the scene (although you’ll be staying right in the middle of San Juan del Sur) and more about the surf.

The Retreatment with Taryn Toomey and Kevin Courtney in Martha’s Vineyard, MA

When: July 8-14
What: Boutique fitness cult-fave Toomey will have you screaming, sweating, laughing, and crying (oh, and burpee-ing) within, like, an hour of arriving at her annual Marthat’s Vineyard retreat (with bonus morning meditations and restorative yoga sessions led by Courtney). Expect a luxe experience–that is, if you can snag a spot; Toomey’s retreats fill up quickly, and this one’s currently waiting list-only.

Coast to Costa in Cuba

When: July 12-16
What: We don’t know anyone who has traveled with Coast to Costa (yet…) but we heart their ethos–local-obsessed, millennial-centric. They work out the details (from homestay locations to getting you your travel visa), which is half the battle of planning a trip. Expect walking tours through the city, horseback rides through tobacco fields, and more. In other words: This trip can be as healthy–or Cuba Libre-fueled-as you make it.

The Artist’s Way with Julia Cameron in Scotts Valley, CA

When: July 13-15
What: There are two groups of people: Those whose lives have been changed by Cameron’s The Artist’s Way, and those who still haven’t picked up the book (yet). If you’re in the former camp, you’ll want to make your way to 1440 Multiuniversity near Santa Cruz for her weekend-long workshop in turning your creative dreams into reality.

Judgement Detox with Gabrielle Bernstein in Stockbridge, MA

When: July 13-15
What: If the only shade you want to be around this summer is the underneath-a-tree variety, then your Mecca is Kripalu–Bernstein (the, ahem, Oprah-approved life coach) is leading a weekend-long workshop all about cutting judgement out of your life. Expect everything from Kundalini yoga to Emotional Freedom Techniques (better known as EFT) sessions, with the goal of making you a little less judge-y by the time you check out.

Surf With Amigas retreat in Punta Banco, Costa Rica

When: July 14-21
What: Although accommodations are a far cry from upscale, you get what amounts to your own private wave at this week-long surf camp founded by surf pro Holly Beck. There’s daily yoga, surprisingly delicious (and fueling) food, and ample hammock time–great for napping between surf sessions. This week’s session includes both an advanced program as well as a coed, family-friendly option (which, depending on where you are in life, is either amazing or…not so much).

Wanderlust Festival in North Lake Tahoe, CA

When: July 19-22
What: The Coachella of yoga festivals, with the big-name acts (Elena Brower, Schuyler Grant, Chelsey Korus…) along with the corporate sponsors. This iteration goes down at Squaw Valley in Northern California, so expect sweeping views of the surrounding alpine meadows (swoon).

From Worrier to Warrior with Patricia Moreno at Scotts Valley, CA

When: July 20-22
What: IntenSati is basically a cheerleading routine-therapy session workout hybrid–which might sound weird, but once you’re in throes of it you’ll find it impossible to not be all in. Add in multiple sessions of the workout every day at 1440 Multiversity with the technique’s founder and there’s no way you make it through the weekend without a major breakthrough.

Intro to Sound Meditation with Sara Auster in Stockbridge, MA

When: July 20-22
What: Auster has been the leading voice (no pun intended) of New York’s sound healing scene–and now she’s dishing on the therapeutic properties of sound. Bonus: You’ll get daily sound baths and meditations from the pro.

Pilates and Pinot retreat in North Fork, NY

When: July 20-22
What: You had us at “pinot.” Classes go down in between vineyard tours and wine tastings (and sometimes happen in situ), plus you’ll also get some time to bike around Shelter Island or, you know, relax at the beach.

Highland Yoga retreat in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

When: July 21-26
What: Yogi-friendly retreat at Maderas Village (AKA Tropical Brooklyn), with two-a-days, meditations sessions, and locally sourced meals–plus all alcohol included, if that’s how you roll (or, er, headstand).

AKT retreat in Martha’s Vineyard, MA

When: July 22-July 28
What: Shakira must be on vacation, because celeb trainer Anna Kaiser is spending the week teaching two-a-day dance cardio sessions at dreamy Vineyard Arts Project. Grapevine your way through classes, with healthy gourmet meals (and–hello!–wine tastings) fueling you.

Yoga For Bad People retreat in Panarea, Italy

When: July 22-29
What: Yoga…with a heavy dose of vino in this small Aeolian Island. YFBP co-founder Heather Lilleston’s leading this trip–and promises that if you can’t go the week without a late-night dance session, there’s a single club in the otherwise sleepy town.

Sky Ting Yoga retreat in Riverport, Nova Scotia

When: July 28-August 4
What: When you’re not getting bendy or settling into deep breathing with ST regulars Kumi Sawyers and Alex Sharry, you can join in tie-dye workshops with Upstate’s own Kalen Kaminski and gourmealthy meals made by Lauren Gerrie (better known as Marc Jacobs’ onetime chef, NBD).

Chica Brava surf retreat in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

When: July 28-August 4
What: If you’re dead-set on nailing your pop up by the end of the week, opt for Chica Brava rather than booking a room at Maderas Village. The ladies-only surf camp is less about the scene (this week’s home base is at their Cloud Farm location, a low-key jungle villa on 500 acres of land–organic garden included) and more about the surf.
